July started with the Senior Open National Championships where a squad of seven Truro fencers headed up to Sheffield for one of the toughest domestic events of the season. For a young group of mostly cadet aged fencers, this was a great opportunity to compete against experienced juniors and seniors. A solid performance from Hannah cemented her position at the very top of the British cadet rankings. At only 10 years of age, Malhar took part in the U14 Girl’s sabre event. She showed great determination winning points against considerably older and more experienced opponents.

This was followed by a cadet BRC event in Cardiff, where Finlay represented the club, and the England Youth Championships, where Remi made his competition debut in the boys U15 sabre event alongside club-mates, Michael and Finlay.

In late July, Caroline and Vanessa headed up to Stratford-upon-Avon to participate in the veteran’s camp at Shakespeare’s Swords. They reunited with previous Truro coaches, Chris Buxton and Peter Frohlich, as they look ahead to the veteran’s world championships in October.

August began with a trip to Hungary for the Mezohegyes summer camp, hosted by Akos Patos and his talented group of Hungarian fencers. The camp gave plenty of opportunity to spar against fencers from all around Europe, experience that will prove vital as our fencers head out to EFC cadet events in Istanbul and Budapest in October.

Back at home, Eiger Swinscow was back from university to provide coaching support. We are lucky as a club to have so many passionate and skilled fencers who can give back to the club and inspire the next generations.

This was particularly noticeable at the end of August when we hosted the Cornwall International Fencing camp, where a whole host of the nation’s best fencers came down to train with us, many of whom who had started their careers at Truro. The camp highlighted the value of our integration within the UK Fencing Project, allowing us to work in partnership with Salle Paul Phoenix and their host of top coaches and fencers. A number of guest coaches were also in attendance including Italian national coach, Alberto Pellegrini, as well as the Belgian Olympic coach, Paul Corteyn.

To top off a summer of high quality sparring, for the last week of the summer holidays we were joined by GB number 1, Caiti Maxwell, who has been back home in Cornwall having recently completed her training as a lawyer.

This puts us in a great position ahead of the Cadet and Junior national championships which will soon take place in Nottingham.

I would like to thank everyone for their hard work over the summer, and to all the members and parents who have helped make things happen.
